| Baby Girl's Happy Tail
We were working hard on our next transport to save lives and help adopters find the perfect dog or pup for them. We were told that the three puppies that we were saving from the shelter were lab mixes. Since they were being transported all the way from Ohio, a little blind faith was needed as we accepted the puppies that Friday evening. The three puppies were all cute - two were definitely sisters but then ...then there was Baby Girl. She was a lab mix - but a lab mixed with Pit Bull. I was concerned for this tiny black puppy with almond eyes that starred back at me with such love and curiosity. I wondered if she would have a hard time finding a home, since many people unfairly judge this breed because of bad PR and reckless breeding. I gave the little puppy a big hug and a kiss and prepared to have her for a little while longer than originally expected. Based on her picture and a lab mix description, she had an adopter who originally wanted to take her - but would the adopter still want her now, with the label of "pit mix" on this sweet, innocent puppy? Baby Girl and I sat on the porch and waited for the potential adopter to arrive. I sat so sadly, thinking how wonderful this puppy was - of all the puppies we had saved, she was by far the sweetest, and most affectionate. Her tail wagged every time I looked at her, and she had such a happy strut. How could she not be adopted just because of her Pit Bull heritage? As I handed the puppy to the woman to meet, I explained that we believed this puppy might be part Pit Bull. I expected to have the pup back in my arms, when instead the adopter said the greatest word I ever heard. "So??" she responded. "Is that it??". She went on to tell me that she had a Pit mix in the past and that she was a GREAT dog. This adopter that had so many dogs before never knew what any of her dogs breeds were and did not care!!! This adopter's big heart and lack of bias certainly paid off. She tells me Baby Girl is a "lab at heart". She loves everyone - kids, the big dogs she lives with, everyone she meets and is more affectionate than ANY pup her adoptive mom ever had. She now lives with 3 adult labs and runs with them as if she has always been part of the pack. She even won over the oldest of the labs that normally can't stand any other dog. It seems this little pup, that no one could have wanted turned out the puppy everyone loves! |
